Київ – Kiev

Whoa, suddenly I received many Ukraine postcards lately.. especially from the capital Kiev. I said suddenly because, I got the first Kiev postcard back in 2006, knowing that it’s one of the rare countries in Postcrossing it wouldn’t be surprising not to receive many cards from there.. but after a long break, I received at least 3 Ukraine cards this year!

From Katjafin. This fairytale castle-like monastery is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Kiev Monastery of the Caves), built in 1015.. and together with the Saint-Sophia Cathedral, it’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The word “lavra” is used to describe high-ranking monasteries for (male) monks of the Eastern Orthodox Church. This monastery is also one of The Seven Wonders of Ukraine.. wow, I wonder if there exists such a list as Seven Wonders of Malaysia :P I will investigate on it soon…

From Meleu. Another view from another side of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.. I can’t really put the two images together.. each gives a different color and atmosphere but at least you can guess this is one of the towers with the golden domes :)

From Anna. This is also part of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra… the Great Lavra Belltower!! This belltower measures 96.5 m tall and was the highest during its construction in 1731–1745.

From Orange_dreamer. More views of Kiev. Small pics from left: 1) Princess Olga monument. 2) Kiev cable railway 3) the Bohdan Khmelnytsky monument. And picture below shows the Mychael’s square.

Roma – Rome

Hi everyone, my name is Haris. I went to Rome, Italy with Valerie and she took this photo of me here to show off to imajica! :P

haris@rome

AAAAAGH! Haris is hijacking my postcards blog again!! *mad* But hmmph, since I received a neat Rome postcard from Valerie, I’ll forgive him. And having said that, I guess I’ll just feature all Rome cards I have gotten so far as well…

From Octabis. Yes, Valerie is so sweet that she sent everyone of GTKY gang a card from Rome! This is a magnificent view of Ponte Sant’Angelo (Bridge of Hadrian) that was constructed during 134-139, and at the back is St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City which was built in 1506. Pilgrims used to use this bridge to reach the basilica.

IT-18537 from Claudia. This is the Fontana del Moro (Fountain of Moro) which is one of the three fountains in the Piazza Navona (Navona Sqaure). It was designed by Giacomo della Porto and built in 1575. This piazza used to be the place where the Romans came to watch games and competitions, and its fountains have been featured in several film scenes.

From Mauclella. This right hand belongs to Costantine, the Emperor of the Roman Empire around year 300. See also his face and foot here.

From Muffins. The famous Colosseum!! This Roman Empire’s largest open-air theater was built in 70-80 AD where 68,000 people could sit inside and 5000 people standing. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial games and battles, and approximately 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games!

From Iside82 with different views of the great Rome. Apart of the Colosseum and the St Peter’s cathedral, seen also here are The White Alton of the Nation (built in 1800) and the Tiberian Isle in the middle of Tevere River.

Greek Ancient Temples

History time! :P I just wish these Greece postcards in my hands had already written on them a detailed yet summarized description behind these ancient temples so I don’t need to do further lookup on Wikipedia. But still, I am doing this.. coz I don’t have any information on the cards.. and historical stuff seem to be meaningless without details like dates, legendary stories and blablabla. So please bear with me as much as I bear with these readings okay.

From Marina.. or I can’t actually remember her name but this postcard was from before Postcrossing time, I was doing some souvenir+CD exchange with a Greek girl and she included some unwritten postcards (hence my ignorance about what and where this is before I look up on internet). So these architectural ruins belong to the Temple of Athena Pronaea in Delphi. Delphi is an archaeological site where once was an important site for the worship for the Greek god Apollo and it has been occupied since the Neolithic Period (5000-3000 BC)! This Athena Pronaea was built in dedication to goddess Athena in around 400 BC. On a side note, the archaeological site of Delphi was listed as Unesco World Heritage in 1987.

From Iinaj, she was in Greece for holiday. “Yassas!” is Hello in Greek. Though this structure look similar as Athena’s, they are actually located in another temple away in the Greek island of Aegina. It was built in the 500 BC for the worship for goddess Aphaia.
