Here comes the city for the International Postcrossing Meeting 2009 – Helsinki. Sorry folks but imajica is still too poor to make a trip to Helsinki this year :( Due to enourmous number of Finnish postcrossers and the fact that almost EVERYONE is a Postcrosser in Finland, some has even called Helsinki the “capital of Postcrossing”. Needless to say, I have received quite a number of postcards from there (lol, as if anyone would be surprised).

From Jatta. This is Helsingin Tuomiokirkko (the Cathederal of Helsinki). Built in 1830-1852. Today the cathedral is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Helsinki.

FI-42820 from Abuela. The picture is from Helsinki market square. Seen also here the Helsinki Cathederal. It’s nice to see the market area is located just at the edge of the land.. too close to the water. Such area in my place won”t be practical for any kind of market at all as it will surely get flooded when the monsoon season comes :P

From Snow. I didn’t realize that this picture was taken almost the same place as the above card because this is a night view and you hardly see the market square here.

From Snufkin. Esplanade Park in Helsinki is a recreational place with cafes and restaurants and shopping streets. There used to be old wooden houses along the streets before they were replaced by the Neo-Renaissance buildings in the end of 19th century. In the centre of the park you can see this Helsinki’s first public monument, which is the statue of Finland’s national poet J.L. Runeberg (1804-1877).

From Kirsi. The light blue building in the middle is the President’s palace. The white building is the mayor’s house and the yellow building is the Swedish Embassy. Helsinki is a city built in the cape and isle hence lots of water you can see on cards :)

From Ichabodhides. Multiviews of pictures which some I think I am familiar with (the cathederal, the monument), and some I am not.

From Hannabilami. I was puzzled when I first saw the card as she wrote the card in perfect Malay :P Heehee, okay this is for “postcard in my language” tag anyway, which she had some Malaysian pal help her to translate. I am not sure in which side of Helsinki this picture is as it doesn’t have any description but it says here “The Cool City of the North” which refers to Helsinki, I guess.

From Wilma. The last card from Helsinki for this entry is this monument built in 1961 to honor Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius. This structure consists of approximately 600 stainless steel tubes of various diameters and it was designed to capture the essance of the music of Sibelius. Anyways. Click here to listen to some symphonies composed by him.
