Stockholm

Stockholm in Sweden is one of the capital cities in Europe that I fell in love at the first sight (I am talking about seeing the images on postcards, of course as I have not yet been Europe, which is sad -__-). This city particularly strikes me with alot of water of the Lake Mälaren and Baltic Sea all around it, I have mentioned this several times before that I have a thing on waterfront cities, and Stockholm is located on 14 small islands in the edge of the Scandanavian peninsula.

Here it is what I am talking about! It does look like a floating city, doesn’t it?? :D And it’s so exciting that you have to cross many bridges to reach a place, yet the roadways don’t look very busy! (read: bridges in Malaysian cities are the most congested places! Yikes). And really, I love how well this city is structured, with awesome buildings, modern and old.

View above is how you see from the top of the City Hall Tower. And picture below shows the Stockholm Palace, the official residence of the Swedish Monarch. There used to be a fortress in this site and they reconstructed it to be a palace in 1697-1760.

Here’s the City Hall and its tower! It was built in 1911-1923 and is home to the Municipal Council for the Stockholm city, and also the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet!

Oh yeah suddenly I have been blessed with many beautiful postcards from Sweden, if you must know ;) and this is among my favorite – as it shows a city tram! I have come to learn that trams are among the earliest public transportation in Europe which is really appealing to me. This Stockholm old tram goes to Djurgården island with many museums, zoo, and amusement park.

München – Munich

Munich is the second batch of Germany postcards I featured here according to city after Berlin, I guess. Or I might have lost count either, so nevermind. Munich was believed to be founded by the monks of the Benedictine, and “Mönche” is Old German for Monks, hence the name.

“Weltstadt mit Herz” or the metropolitan city with heart, is the Munich city’s motto. This view shows the New Town Hall and Marienplatz, a large open square. If you look closer at the tower there’s the Rathaus-Glockenspiel dates from 1908. Glockenspiels are exciting features in Germany, they are kind of the equivalent of huge music boxes built into the buildings and town squares, but with real bells and ancient mannequin dancers. And this particular Glockenspiel has 43 bells and 32 dancers, and it chimes everyday at 11am. I really want to see (and listen) this Glockenspiel live! :D

Here is the pedestrian street in the old part of Munich, the arch in the middle dates from 1315 and was part of the surrounding wall. Hmm, I have come across many old cities in Europe are walled, which is interesting. And see the tulips! :) They actually change the flowers here according to seasons, and you can see tulips in Spring.

Some views of the grocery market in Munich, though I am so curious if the existance of these statutes have anything to do with the place being a market. And it does look like an exotic market!

Київ – Kiev

Whoa, suddenly I received many Ukraine postcards lately.. especially from the capital Kiev. I said suddenly because, I got the first Kiev postcard back in 2006, knowing that it’s one of the rare countries in Postcrossing it wouldn’t be surprising not to receive many cards from there.. but after a long break, I received at least 3 Ukraine cards this year!

From Katjafin. This fairytale castle-like monastery is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Kiev Monastery of the Caves), built in 1015.. and together with the Saint-Sophia Cathedral, it’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The word “lavra” is used to describe high-ranking monasteries for (male) monks of the Eastern Orthodox Church. This monastery is also one of The Seven Wonders of Ukraine.. wow, I wonder if there exists such a list as Seven Wonders of Malaysia :P I will investigate on it soon…

From Meleu. Another view from another side of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.. I can’t really put the two images together.. each gives a different color and atmosphere but at least you can guess this is one of the towers with the golden domes :)

From Anna. This is also part of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra… the Great Lavra Belltower!! This belltower measures 96.5 m tall and was the highest during its construction in 1731–1745.
