Birthday cards 2009!

I never thought I would still be receiving birthday cards from Postcrossers this year, I mean, after the long hiatus last year and awkward comeback I hardly knew many people anymore in the beginning, but who would have thought, some neat buddies on the forum have been kind enough and instantly become dear friends I wish I had known them much earlier :) (and you know who you are :)) Well, these are some cards, arrived to celebrate my so-called birthday this year. I am happy to say they have really brightened my day and made me so special in a way that there do exist people out there who care enough to write so lovely wishes on pretty cards despite that they’re far away from me! So MY DEARS, READ THIS: I LOVE YOU!! :)

OK this is not from Postcrosser at least. My dearest penpal Sonia whose letters had failed to reach me these past few years, but after over one year, she replied my letter again and with this lovely card recently. In fact, throughout our friendship, she has always remembered my birthday.. although I didnt manage to remember hers this much! :/

From Anagahan. So this is the first birthday card from a Postcrosser arrived this year, and I am glad it came from a dear friend of GTKY. Thanks Ana, if you ever read this, you know you’ve been special to me! :)

From Cockie. Though it’s actually a return card of birthday card I had sent to her friend (which I found a really wonderful way to cheer a friend!!), but knowing that I was having my birthday to come, Mieko also wrote this card as a birthday wish to me. Thanks so much for this pretty card!!

From Hadassah. HAHA Essi!! Are these you and me in the picture, perhaps in our 70s, celebrating our birthday together? On a tree! LOL it doesn’t look too bad! :D :D And thanks dear for this lovely wishes that cheered me up! Big hugs!

I have freaking turned 26 today. I don’t want to talk much about it. But being a Postcrosser, there’s always something to make me smile on my birthday!

No, it’s not the cake!! But cards!! :D Yes, the lovely Postcrossers have always cheered me up regardless I hate the fact that I get older on birthdays! :) In this post I would like to thank a heaven to everyone who spent some time writing and sending me your lovely wishes, you have no idea how much it means to me!! :) BIG BIG HUGS!!! (well yeah, I’m featuring cards from past years first, as this is officially the first birthday post for this blog – which only started this year – and in a few days I’ll be posting the cards which I have got for this year’s birthday :)). And actually, I have put several other birthday cards that had already fit in regular posts before, and they are equally special to me as well!!

OKAY that was a postcards SPAM -______- but I can’t help it coz I did receive alot of birthday cards in past years!! (and of course, a portion of them are thanks to the fact that I put a “tiny advert” about my birthday on my forum signature once, well, hence those expected surprises :P and a few from Birthday tags and RR as well.. so I did not receive all these merely because I am a total celebrity or anything :D though it’s good if I were one lol). And still my dear friends Postcrossers, you are the best!!

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a state in the northeastern of USA and it was nicknamed as the Keystone state, because it was located in the center among the original “Thirteen Colonies” which were the states of British America in 1783. OK nevermind the boring history fact.. Hershey’s chocolate is originated from here! Hershey was originally named Derry Church, Pennsylvania. It was renamed Hershey in 1906 because of its growing popularity of the yummy chocolate! Hmm but I don’t have a postcard from Hershey.. yet. Oh and if you must know, Philadelphia used to be the capital of the United States between 1790 and 1800.

From Rissyrissy. I don’t have information on the card about where in Pennsylvania is this country view with cornfield is located.. but look at the balloons!! This is surely a lovely postcard that Rissy sent me for my 24th birthday! :D

From Zmrzlina. This is the Fort Roberdeau, which was constructed in 1778, under General Daniel Ruoberdeau’s supervision and sits on 47 acres near Altoona. It’s also known as the “Lead Mine Fort” as it protected mining operations for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary war. Well nowadays people like forts as there are usually places to picnic :)

From Krhocevar. After the country views, now comes the big city. Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania. And this is the Golden Triangle where the Allegheny and Monogahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River, hence the largest inland port in the US! There are over 700 bridges crossing these rivers and valleys. I always love waterfront cities like this.. especially on this postcard with the reflection of those buildings in the water! And look at the fountain! Pretty, isn’t it?

It’s one month before I turn 26 and I don’t quite feel like it… argh. Can someone stop the time pleaseee?? But looking at the brighter side, here’s another birthday wish I got a couple of years back.. from Brazil :) Yes the only thing I love about birthdays is people’s thoughtfulness, especially when you get many birthday cards from Postcrossers filling your mailbox so you can at least forget for a while the nightmare of getting older! ;)

I guess I’ll just feature another card from Dine now that this one looks rather related. This cute comic illustration is entitled “Chico Violeiro” and showing two famous Brazilian cartoon characters: Chico Bento (Chuck Billy) and Rosinha (Rosy Lee). It was actually made as a parody to the painting “O Violeire” by Almeida Junior in 1899. Here’s a picutre of the original painting I found on internet:

Ain’t this lovely? :D:D Almeida Junior was the most important Brazilian realist painter from the 19th century and a major inspiration for the modern painters. His artworks mostly pictured rural figures, specially farmers and the countrymen that is a kind of a symbol of the rural areas in São Paulo.

Here are some postcards from China with significant Oriental illustrations

From Wespe. This pretty card came as my 23rd birthday card!!!!!!!!!!! XD Wespe was one of the earliest Postcrossers who were thoughtful enough to surprise me with birthday wishes.. I was so lucky!

From Mcdh. This postcard was issued by the State Postal Bureau of PR China, and this card shows a set of traditional dress for the Chinese New Year.

From Moderntime. This is a lovely art, isn’t it? Sorry for this blur scanned image, though. This card came from a set of postcards The Twelve Ladies of Jinling City and apparently this lovely lady named Shi Xiangyun arrived in my hands to be part of my collection! She was a daughter of Shi’s, a big family, who lost her parents during her childhood and grew up by her uncle’s support. She loved poetry so much that she was called a ‘mad poetry lover’. A tragic ending came after her marriage and it was pictured like “the clouds lifted over Gaotang Temple, and the water dried up in the Xiang River.” Hmm… deep.

From Moderntime. I guess this is the only postcard I received came with stamps put at the picture side of postcard!! Awesome!! How can I put this, now it makes the card more vintage (you see, I have come across many vintage postcards having a stamp on the picture side) and also maxi postcards. Anyway, this is from Hong Kong comic Sweet and Gentle dates back in 1970.

From Mcdh. Another postcard issued by the Chinese State Postal Bureau, this illustration with a kid playing kites during springtime.

From Jessica. This colorful card is entitled “Peacock spread the wings”…

Garfield!

Okay, Garfield ain’t from Finland but they do publish Garfield postcards in there, how cool is that? :D These are a few Garfields I received from Finnish Postcrossers, and given that I have loved Garfield since school years, these cards are absolutely among my favorites!

From Zeeta. This card came with that bite mark! Who ate my postcard half?? Probably this sleepy Garfield. He says, “I would like moreof the mornings is they started late” :D I think EXACTLY like you do, Garfield!

From Snow. “Congratulations!” and this is for my 23rd birthday!! Snow shares birthday with me, yay!

From Mimma. Garfield is funny enough already he doesn’t even need to be a clown!

Parrots in Brazil

Hmm and I haven’t even put Brazil here, what have I been doing?? Okay I found some cool cards from Brazil, with colorful parrots on them :D I don’t know if parrots are the official bird of the country, or they’re originated from there, or they can be seen everywhere in Brazil like you see cows in the Netherlands (random guess yeah, but I got 2 official cards from NL that show cows alone! :P) I don’t know what is the most familiar animal representing Malaysia though… is it orangutan? Monkey? Hahaha. But you can get at least 10 postcards showing those primates from here, so I guess I am quite right.

Pantanal is a preserved wetland habitat of many species of birds and other animals, especially this colorful parrot that Julia sent me for my 24th birthday!! :D

I am not sure if the parrot is really sitting there or this is a photoshopped image, but this Iguassu Fall is sure breathtakingly breautiful! It’s located in the Iguazu National Park which is best known for its waterfalls and birdlife. This park is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

Let’s go back to Pantanal for bit more details. Pantanal is a Portuguese term for swamp, or wetland. It’s a huge ecosystem area spanning mostly within Brazil, and also Bolivia and Paraguay and is home to 1000 bird species, 400 fish species, 300 mammalian species, and 480 reptile species. It has also been listed as UNESCO world heritage site.

Moomins, Part 1

Okay. Let’s get back to REASON #1 WHY FINLAND ROCKS: Moomins Characters! :)) Last time I had only put Little My card alone – before I chose to feature multiple cards in a post shortly later. YAY and I have received many Moomins cards from the one and only Finland, though not a big collection yet but enough for me to have to make multiple posts for Moomin cards I have got so far… and this time I’m presenting here some Moomin postcards with greetings written on it, I suppose. Since it’s written mostly in Finnish (and Swedish too for some.. as at first Moomins spoke only Swedish – coz creator Tove Jansson’s mothertounge was Swedish though she’s a Finn).. and it will make sense if I write the English translation of each card.

From Tarru. “Delicious holiday!” or rather Tarru wrote here, “Have a delicious birthday party!”.. given that I got this card for my birthday! YAY!

From Olivia. “Lots of Luck!” or can also be “Big Congratulations!”

From Pikkis. “Christmas is the time for warmth and friendship”.

From Liina. Graattis is Swedish for “Congratulations!”

YAY. I received my first Russian underwear and it’s a good excuse for me to make a post about Russia cards again. (Yes, send me a pair of underwear from your country and I’ll blog about postcards from your country..hehe). These pair are from the undies group swap actually, and sent by lovely Ninon :)

I have got a number of cards from Moscow, the city which always reminds meof the St Basil with onion-shaped domes :)

From Maymak. Here they are, the building that makes you feel like you’re in the Wonderland :) I already put another St Basil card earlier in this blog.

From MZebra, she sent this card for my birthday in 2007 :) *hugs* This is the State Historical Museum, established in 1872, which is home to millions of prehistoric artifacts, artworks, Russian ceramics, manuscripts, as well as rooms occupied by the Moscow University and libraries.

From MZebra. Another building with onion shaped domes, this is the Perervinsky Monastery of St Nicholas, dates back to the late 14th century. Being an ignorant as I am, I could not actually tell the difference of church, cathederal and monastery. But from wiki it says a monastery is the building, or complex of buildings, that houses a room reserved for prayer as well as the domestic quarters and workplace of monastics, whether monks or nuns, and whether living in community or alone. Got it? :)

From Shusha, showing a panoramic view of the Kremlin. Kremlin is a historic complex home to four palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers, along with the Red Square it’s one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. This is also the official residence of the President of Russia.

From Maymak. And this is the Red Square! :) Where the St Basil and all the gorgeous fun-looking buildings are located. Here you a closer look of one of the Kremlin Towers.
