OKAY that was  a postcards SPAM -______- but I can’t help it coz I did receive alot of birthday cards in past years!! (and of course, a portion of them are thanks to the fact that I put a “tiny advert” about my birthday on my forum signature once, well, hence those expected surprises :P and a few from Birthday tags and RR as well.. so I did not receive all these merely because I am a total celebrity or anything :D though it’s good if I were one lol). And still my dear friends Postcrossers, you are the best!!

Croatian coastline towns

My first Croatia entry.. though my postcards from there are from different scattered places, they are actually located along the coastline of the Adriatic sea. The Adriatic sea is part of the Mediterranean sea that separates the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan Peninsula.

From Dorilys. I love this old fortress and buildings! I am amazed with the fact that they’re standing juse a few inches from the water… I can’t help thinking if it’s safe?? Because here the sea water is never at the same level, it can go down in daytime and at night part of the beach will be flooded. It’s never a good idea to make a building or house very near to the beach.. even there’s been a proverb saying more or less, “Dont build a house near the beach if you don’t expect a danger”… well maybe it doesn’t apply in Croatia at least, since this Dubrovnik city has been standing since the Middle ages, being the centre of the development back in the 15th and 16th centuries and home to many great artists, scientists and other scholars  in Croatian language and literature. Between its golden ages in the 14th century and 1808, Dubrovnik was a free state Republic and only became part of Croatia during the WWI. Needless to say, Dubrovnik old city has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

From AJDonkey. Now comes Murter, a Croatian island and this view shows the old parts where you can see typical fisherman villages like this.

HR-138 from Mijo. This is actually the first postcard I received from Croatia.. back in 2006. And it’s funny that I only knew Hrvatska as Croatian name for the country just after I got this card! I mean.. I was a bit puzzled with the ID saying HR.. and thanks goodness the stamps helped me from being ignorant for too long :P (well the same way I felt dumb realizing Switzerland as Helvetica yet having CH as the ID code) anyways Makarska is another coastline town.. it’s a tourist center with beaches and hotels, yet also an old town from the middle ages. It used to be conquered by the Republic of Venice in the 13th century. (Oh yeah? Venice was a republic too!)

Roma – Rome

Hi everyone, my name is Haris. I went to Rome, Italy with Valerie and she took this photo of me here to show off to imajica! :P

haris@rome

AAAAAGH! Haris is hijacking my postcards blog again!! *mad* But hmmph, since I received a neat Rome postcard from Valerie, I’ll forgive him. And having said that, I guess I’ll just feature all Rome cards I have gotten so far as well…

From Octabis. Yes, Valerie is so sweet that she sent everyone of GTKY gang a card from Rome! This is a magnificent view of Ponte Sant’Angelo (Bridge of Hadrian) that was constructed during 134-139, and at the back is St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City which was built in 1506. Pilgrims used to use this bridge to reach the basilica.

IT-18537 from Claudia. This is the Fontana del Moro (Fountain of Moro) which is one of the three fountains in the Piazza Navona (Navona Sqaure). It was designed by Giacomo della Porto and built in 1575. This piazza used to be the place where the Romans came to watch games and competitions, and its fountains have been featured in several film scenes.

From Mauclella. This right hand belongs to Costantine, the Emperor of the Roman Empire around year 300. See also his face and foot here.

From Muffins. The famous Colosseum!! This Roman Empire’s largest open-air theater was built in 70-80 AD where 68,000 people could sit inside and 5000 people standing. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial games and battles, and approximately 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games!

From Iside82 with different views of the great Rome. Apart of the Colosseum and the St Peter’s cathedral, seen also here are The White Alton of the Nation (built in 1800) and the Tiberian Isle in the middle of Tevere River.
