Ha Long Bay

Sorry, but here’s another Vietnam card :) But this is special, I promise! I just have to put this particular postcard because of two reasons (well, apart of coming from a hard-to-get country and beautiful landscape).

VMPhuong sent me this huge panoramic card of Ha Long Bay – of of the world’s heritage sites (okay, so that’s the first reason). And I have just learned that in every Vietnamese postcard there’s an amusing legendary story behind it that the wiki has to share, ha ha. Here’s one of Ha Long Bay: Long ago, when the Vietnamese were fighting Chinese invaders, the gods sent a family of dragons to help defend the land. The dragons spit out jewels and jade, which turned into the islands and islets dotting the bay, linking together to form a great wall against the invaders. The people kept their land safe and formed what later became the country of Vietnam. After that, dragons were interested in peaceful sightseeing of the Earth and decided to live here. The place where Mother Dragon flew down was named Hạ Long, and the place where the dragon children attended upon their mother was called Bái.

And the second reason is this:

If there’s such thing as imajica’s Guiness record, this would get the title “The Postard Received With Most Stamps Ever”! It’s such an honor to get such notable card full of colorful stamps, and not just usual stamps, but a special set showing a few of  Vietnamese 54 ethnic groups. If this card was in regular size, obviously the stamps wouldn’t have fit in! How I wish Malaysian stamps produced in smaller values as well, like, 10sen, so I can put 5 stamps on a card. How do you like it?

Hanoi

I should have made this entry of Vietnam cards after the Indonesia and Cambodia entries.. I mean I already had in my mind to show postcards from Southeast Asian countries I have in a row, so it would look neat that way. But I don’t know why I got distracted to write about the German half-timbered houses instead. Though I wouldn’t mind if Germany was actually in Southeast Asia :D especially with those pretty houses. Hmm. Lame jokes, nevermind. Anyways, let’s make a visit to Hanoi!

From Nam, showing this One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi. It’s a historic Buddhist temple built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. Here’s an interesting story behind the pagoda: the Emperor was childless, and one night he dreamt meeting a Buddha who handed him a baby son while seated on a lotus flower. Later he got married and a son really was born, so as a gratitude for this event he built a pagoda by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond.

From Nam again. A beautiful sunset view of Hồ Gươm (The Sword Lake) in autumn. The lake was once part of the Red river and throughout thousands of years of geographical changes, the lake moved eastward to its present position kilometers from the river. Now a story again: During the Le Dynasty 6 centuries with the war against the Minh, King Le Thai To was given a precious fairy Sword by the Golden Turtle God. After 10 years of continuous struggling, the King finally defeated the Chinese and reclaimed the nation’s independence. One day, while boating on lake Luc Thuy, a large turtle came towards him and grabbed the sword with its mouth and submerged. The king mourned the lost of such a valuable sword, yet could not find either the turtle or the sword. He realized that the God must have lent him the sword to fight the enemy, and now that his nation was free, the sword must be returned. Therefore he named the lake as (Returned) Sword Lake.
