Years ago Glo was one of the active Postcrossers and a significant one as there weren’t many Asian people on the forum that time.. so we were quite on high demand lol. Though she has left Postcrossing for ages now and doesn’t seem to make a come back like I did (hmm, when did I actually leave Postcrossing??), apparently she’s on my Facebook and says she’s coming to KL end of this month. So even though I can’t see her given that I no longer live in KL, I’m making this post as a welcome her to KL (again) :))

OK, here are art cards published by House of Sampoerna which Glo used to send me. House of Sampoerna is a “cigarette museum” in Surabaya, Indonesia.. but it’s not actually displaying cigarettes, but items of the Sampoerna company and its founder from over the decades. Glo loves to come here because she likes the smell of cloves :D I think I love smell of cloves as well.. haha.

“Old Bicyles of Sempoerna’s Founder Liem Seeng Tee”.

“Original Kebaya of Siem Tjiang Nio, the wife of Sampoerna’s Founder.”

Please read more about House of Sampoerna museum here and here as I find it really interesting… and its website can be found at houseofsampoerna.museum.

I got this neat magnet from Shinta the other day which figures a pretty Wayang Kulit character.

I simply adore Wayang Kulit culture, perhaps because Kelantanese also have our own Wayang Kulit. It’s definitely the earliest “opera show” ever existed in this region, which is in forms of traditional puppets shadow play which stories are told by a Dalang – the man behind the scene. A Dalang has this amazing abilty of making his voice to sound in many different tones belonging to each puppet in the story, so you won’t realize that all characters’ voice actually belong to only one person. Come to think about it, Kelantan is the only Malaysian state which has features similar to what Indonesia has, Wayang Kulit and Batik art for instance. It’s quite hard to understand if any relation exists between us, given that Kelantan is nowhere near to Indonesia geographically. We are up here near to Thailand!

I also received a Wayang postcard from Glo long time ago. Indonesian Wayang characters are somewhat different, and I can say prettier, than these Kelantanese Wayang characters…

haha the right one sure looks scary :P He must be some evil man obviously. And the left two characters are usually princes or Kings. And sitting in the middle are the servants or armies of the King. In fact each character has certain name which remains legendary for decades even in different stories or by different Dalang. Pak Dogol, Sri Rama, Samad, Wok Yoh, just to name a few.. I can identify some which are familiar from the videos I see (oh yes, only videos, I never have actually seen live performance of Wayang Kulit, sigh), and I still mix up names for others.

LOL so I am now talking about Kelantanese Wayang Kulit instead of Indonesian simply I have no idea of what Indonesian Wayang is about. Alright, so Kelantanese Wayang stories are based on Hindu epic from earlier time – which some of the characters are known from. But it has been well blended with local culture ever since, and the Wayang kulit stories nowadays are mostly stand up comedy which is sooooooo original :) Watch some of Kelantanese Wayang Kulit stories here on YouTube. Oh, and some have English subtitle too (though I am afraid the subtitle won’t be that useful for you to digest the comedy sense).

Bali to me is an island resort with relaxing spas and luxury chalets. Now I sound as if I’ve been there. Ironically, I haven’t.

So I can only happily sigh looking at this beautiful beach which fellow Malaysian Postcrosser Chat noir sent me, hoping that I can still hear the fresh air breeze and smell the beach of Bali from the card.

Ohh, Chat noir seems to have gone to Bali many many times already!! This was sent right from there with Indonesian stamp. Colorful culture they have there. These Balinese women are carrying offerings to the temple on a festive day. Balinese are mainly practising Hinduism, unlike the rest of Indonesia which is Muslim majority. In fact, Hindu was the belief of people in Indonesian islands and Malay peninsula during the 11st century before Islam came to the region in the 15th century.

This Bali card shows Mount Agong, the highest volcano in Bali island. Glo sent me this postcard and she even puts mountain-shaped stamps to match this card. Very interesting. But I don’t get to scan stamps otherwise I’ll be busier in double. And crazier in double. Heh.
