Wien – Vienna

Vienna is the capital of Austria and used to be the capital of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire before the first World War, which later came apart and each of many states in it gained independence and became  smaller countries, and after another war or crisis the new countries came apart some more and became even smaller countries…. and it goes on and on resulting many countries in the Eastern Europe nowadays.

I first knew Austria much later than I had known many other European countries.. it was one year I got to see perhaps an Olympic Games countries representatives in its opening on TV and I was like, “Austria?? Is it typo and they actually meant Australia??” lol don’t laugh, well at least I knew Australia :P) so regardless it wasn’t well known at least to me, maybe my number of Vienna cards now can stand up and says the city was really once a great Empire capital.

This is the Viennese Naschmarkt which is Vienna’s most popular market. This market has existed since the 16th century when mainly milk bottles were sold, but now it has much everything and known for its intercultural flair.

The Wiener Riesenrad (Viennese giant wheel) located in the Prater amusement park in Vienna. It was one of the earlier ferris wheels, constructed in 1897 to celebrate Emperor Franz Josef I‘s golden Jubilee. It is almost 65m in diameter and originally had 30 gondolas, which some were damaged during the World War II and after the rebuilt, it now has 15 gondolas.

Wien Ringstrasse is circular road surrounding the Innere Stadt district of Vienna, where many of these important historical buildings are located. So you can see the 4th card above (showing the theater) in this postcard :))
